This month we saw the formation of the New York State Disc Golf Hall of Fame and its very first inductees. The list of inductees includes long time proponents and supporters of the sport. We are incredibly proud and honored to announce that WeDGE’s very own President, Bill Newman (PDGA #1603) was inducted as part of the very first group honorees. Other inductees include Doug Correa #304, Dan Doyle #310, Doug Opiel #4657, Royce Racinowsky #2089.
Bill’s origin story begins as an Ultimate (Frisbee) player. He captained the team at Boston University (1979-1981) and he later played for the Hostages and competed in two World Championships (1981-1982).
After years of playing ultimate, Bill took up the challenge of disc golf. Bill has played competitive disc golf as a member of the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) and MadCity Disc Golf (MADC) since 1995. He’s also competed as a masters and grand-masters level player in New England Flying Disc Association (NEFA). Bill won the New England Disc Golf Championship in the Pro Masters field in 2004.
In the intervening years Bill has worked as the New York State NEFA Representative. Bill has served as a PDGA volunteer and works on their disciplinary committee. Bill is a well known and well respected marshal during many of the PDGA’s national events and World Championships. Bill was the course professional for 5 years at our course in Mt. Kisco (Leonard Park DGC) and he was the originator and tournament director (TD) for the Kisco Klassic (IceBowl) event for 10 years running. He was also the organizer, designer and is currently chief caretaker of our course at FDR State Park which he created in the year 2000. He was the inventor and TD of the FDR Fools Fest event for 13 years. He was also the creator of our weekly Mixed Doubles events at FDR State Park. He directed the New York States Disc Golf events at Leonard Park, Warwick Town Park and FDR State park. Most recently Bill has founded our Throw Pink Disc Golf events where he hopes to spread the love of disc golf to women and children in the area all while helping to raise funds and cancer awareness in his community. Bill is continually involved in fund raising for a variety of local organizations in the Westchester area including Support Connection and the Food Bank of Westchester as well as many other worthy causes through his philanthropic disc golf events.
We can think of no better qualified nor more deserving honoree than Bill Newman. His accomplishments are far too extensive to adequately do them proper justice here. Suffice it to say that his impact is incalculable. The power of his legacy and his shining example will long endure. Today Bill continues to work on his courses and spends time with his loving family. He continues to mentor many of the local Tournament Directors and passes on his knowledge, his experience and most of all his love and respect for the game.
